KIFWEBE SONGYE WOOD MASK

The most famous masks created by the Songye are worn in connection with the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe secret society.
These are called the Kifwebe which means ‘mask’ in the Songye language. It has a face covered with linear incisions
a square protruding mouth and a linear nose set between globular pierced eyes. It can be masculine (with a central crest) or feminine (with a displayed coiffure). The Tribal Arts of Africa by Jean-Baptiste Bacquart
