For many nomadic herders in East Africa preserving an intricate hairstyle is of prime importance. Therefore a durable, lightweight and portable headdress is essential. While the flock or herd the African headrest or pillow comes in handy for a quick nap under the nearest Baobab tree. In many African cultures, small wooden “pillows” are used to support the head during sleep and in some instances to preserve a hairstyle. Many groups in southern Ethiopia make carved wooden headrests to enable people to sleep without interfering with their complicated coiffure.
