BAULE, ancestral figures, Ivory Coast

Click on a picture or name to view a larger image.

BAULE ancestral figures have been mostly used for two purposes:
the first was to incarnate a spirit of the bush, Asie Usu:
the second was to represent a spouse from the other world, Blolo Bla or Blolo Bian.

The Asie Usu spirits live in the countryside. They are mischevious, but, if honoured properly, will grant fruitful harvests and hunts. They sometimes express desire, through the village diviner, to be associated with a specific person.

The Blolo Bla or Blolo Bian represents a spouse from the spirit world. Baule people believe that every person has such a spouse. It manifests itself through a series of dreams, usually of a sexual nature, and is believed to be responsible for practical and spiritual problems that arise in the life of the individual.

001-005 = Blolo Bla or Blolo Bian
