BAMBARA ancestral
figures, called Dyonyeni, are thought to be associated
with either th southern Dyo society or the Kwore society.
These female figures usually appear with geometric features such
as large conical breasts. They were used by the blacksmith members
of the Dyo society during dances to celebrate the end
of their initiation ceremonies. They were handled, held by dancers
and placed in the middle of the ceremonial circle.
