Kumu
Democratic Republic of Congo
(formerly Zaire)
The Kumu came from the east, originating in the region of the Ugandan lakes. They descended toward the upper Lindi River and settled in the area around Kisangani. They live in a dense forest terrain which include natural palm forests.Due to their proximity to the river they have had constant contact with the Metoko and Lengola tribes. In the mid 18th century the Kumu were dominated by Arab traders which led to the quick urbanization and weakening of the Kumus' internal power structure. There were numerous small revolts but the Kumu were never able to regain their autonomy after the Arab arrival.
